という豪華な二日間になります。
第3土曜の歌会では、いわゆる伝統的な図形音符のレパートリー以外の曲を、僕が七つの音符（seven shapes）に移調して持っていくことがよくあります。今回はちょっと思い切って、16世紀スコットランド詩篇歌に挑戦してみたいと思っています。
1566年にまとめられた The Wode Psalter（※“Wood”の中英語綴り）という曲集にある詩篇 111篇 (Psalms 111) です。アイルランド在住の図形音符歌い手、マイケル・ウォーカーさんが、ズームセッションでこの曲を歌っている録音を聴いて、完全に心を奪われてしまいました。
まるで16世紀のスコットランドの教会にマイクを落としたかのような音で……。ぜひ一度聴いてみてください。聴けば言いたいことが分かると思います。
ありがたいことに今はインターネットの時代なので、1566年当時の原譜までたどり着くことができました。ただし、それを「どう読むのか」を理解するまでが、ちょっとした探偵仕事でした。各声部が別々の楽譜になっているんです。写真はテノール（＝旋律）声部の冒頭です。

僕自身は音楽理論をちゃんと勉強したことがないので、正直すぐ手に負えませんが、この曲は普通の長調・短調の旋法ではありません。いわゆる ドリア旋法とミクソリディア旋法を行き来します。
試しに Brave という検索エンジン（https://search.brave.com）で
"What are the seven musical modes?"（旋法）
と打ってみたら、
ドリア旋法：「ジャズっぽく、ソウルフル」
ミクソリディア旋法：「ロックやブルース風でよく使われ、ブルース風で未解決な感じ」
と出てきました。なんか…そそられません？
録音を聴いていて「ジャズっぽく」と「ロックやブルース風」という感じは正直あまりしませんが、「ソウルフル」と「未解決感」には大いにうなずけます。
というわけで、ぜひ七図形の会で一緒にこの曲を試してもらえたら、僕は本当にうれしいです。

In the third Saturday singing, I often bring music not in the traditional shape-note repertoire, but which I have transposed into seven shapes. This time, I'd like to try having everyone sing something from the 16th-century Scottish Psalter, harmonized in a collection called The Wode Psalter (Middle English spelling of "Wood") of 1566. After hearing Ireland-based American shape-note singer Michael Walker's recording of a Zoom session of Psalm 111 in The Wode Psalter, I was bewitched by it enough that I wanted to try it with y'all. It's from an entirely different era and sounds as if someone had dropped a microphone into a 16th-century Scottish church. Take a listen and you'll understand what I mean.
Fortunately, in the Internet era, I could track down the original 1566 score of this song, but it took some detective work to figure out how to read it. Each part had its own sheet music. Pictured below is the beginning of the tenor (i.e., melody) line. I then transposed the whole thing into modern (relatively speaking) shape notes, which is here:

As I have never studied music theory, it can quickly go over my head, but this song is not in a conventional major or minor mode. It alternates between what musicians call the Dorian and Mixolydian modes. When I typed "What are the seven musical modes?" in the Brave search engine (https://search.brave.com), it said that
Dorian is "known for a jazzy, soulful character" and
Mixolydian is "common in rock and blues, with a bluesy, unresolved quality."
Doesn't that just intrigue you? When I listen to the recording, "rock," "jazzy," and "bluesy" don't exactly come to mind, but "soulful" and "unresolved" definitely.
So, I would be overjoyed if you would join me in trying this song at our seven-note singing.
