That’s the American Broadcasting Company, not the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Either way, I guess this means we’ve made it, although that doesn’t mean anything unless people that didn’t realize this existed now know they need to do this.
As with any new story, there are a few mistakes.
1. “Dates back to the late 18th century.” No, it dates back to the early 18th century.
2. “There’s no religion here.” That depends on the singer. As one of us, Helen Brown, says in the next sentence, “to a lot of us, it is worship.” Yes, for many, it’s deeply religious. And as she later says, “every voice is holy.”
3. “First published in Georgia in 1864.” No, first published in 1844. Pretty basic fact to mess up.
Later, Helen says Sacred Harp is family. I’m here in rural Japan, but I know many of the people in the video and I can vouch for her by saying they are family indeed, even though I haven’t seen most of them in years.
