下北沢合唱の会/Shimokitazawa Singing

Follow the above link for details on a new singing from the Christian Harmony, a 19th-century American shape-note tunebook written in seven shapes. Especially of interest to those who are already familiar with do-re-mi. The sponsoring church intends to hold this every first Saturday of the month (Note: NOT Saturday before the first Sunday), but will hold a trial run first on

First Tokyo All-Day Singing

We're delighted to host our first all-day Sacred Harp singing here in Tokyo!

Join us for a day of singing at Ikebukuro Anglican Church (Ikebukuro Seikōkai) on Saturday, November 18th, 2017. We plan to start at 10:30, take a break for lunch (the first ever Japanese "dinner on the ground") and then keep singing till 4. After that we'll go to a local izakaya to socialise into the evening.

Then the next day, we'll sing a half day from the 7-shape Christian Harmony and other foreign and Japanese songs transcribed into 7-shape shape notes, hiragana, and roman letters. That's

Short URL for flyer

I thought the web address for the Sacred Harp flyer was too long, so I ran it through TinyURL, the website that shortens web address. Here's the resulting address:

Not sure which song to call?

At our monthly singings in Ikebukuro, we usually go round the square taking turns choosing which song to sing next.  Of course you're always welcome to "pass", especially if it's your first time, but if you do want to call and are not sure which song to choose, here are some of the most popular among our regulars:

33b Abbeville
34b St. Thomas
38t Winter
47t Primrose
47b Idumea
49t Old Hundred
49b Mear
86 Poland
146 Hallelujah
147t Boylston
162 Plenary
178 Africa
276 Bridgewater
277 Antioch
287 Cambridge
347 Christian's Farewell
350 Nativity
448t Consecration
452 Martin
457 Wayfaring Stranger
503b Lloyd

We've sung all of these at least three times in the past, and there's a good chance we'll be able to get through them with little or no trouble.  If you've never called or led a song before, please give one of these a try!
